A Winning Combination: Capacity Building and Philanthropic Support

Updated: Aug 12

Featuring Access Youth Academy

SVP and Venture Philanthropy recognize that donations are better directed toward impact when nonprofits have strong business practices in place. Together, we collaborated to maximize the social impact of one nonprofit through capacity building and philanthropic support in a funded consulting engagement for Access Youth Academy. The result? An organization with a clear five-year vision, an achievable plan to meet its growth goals, and a concise, engaging means to communicate its current and anticipated impact to potential supporters.

Walter Green and Lisa Liguori of Venture Philanthropy knew of Access Youth Academy and were eager to support the nonprofit’s work. The mission was compelling – transforming the lives of underserved youth through academic mentorship and urban squash. In conversation with Executive Director Renato Paiva, they discovered a shared desire to invest in Access Youth Academy’s organizational capacity. How many more students could the nonprofit serve if they had a direct, actionable plan for growth and a compelling story of impact? It was time to get to work.

Venture Philanthropy funded an SVP consulting team with the professional skills and industry expertise to support Access Youth Academy’s goals. Lead Partner Lisa Davidson and Partners Andy Kaiser and Susan Schindelar spent nine months alongside the nonprofit’s leadership team and key board members to build the capacity for its desired growth. The engagement focused on a robust strategic planning process to develop a five-year plan with the strategies, tactics, human resources, budgets, and projected revenues necessary to achieve the plan. With a roadmap to achieve this future vision, the consulting team directed Access Youth Academy’s attention to communicating its growth goals and community impact by refining current messaging into a one-page tool for engagement. Staff or board members can use the tool to excite potential supporters about the nonprofit’s work, encouraging them to help make a meaningful difference in the lives of San Diego youth, and now, Los Angeles.

“SVP did an incredible work with Access Youth Academy. Lisa, Andy, and Susan were instrumental in guiding the work towards a fantastic strategic plan. We will surely engage again if the opportunity comes.” – Renato Paiva, Executive Director

Venture Philanthropy successfully amplified its giving to Access Youth Academy, creating a stronger organization, more ready than ever to deepen its impact in San Diego and expand to Los Angeles to serve over 1,000 youth annually. SVP is proud to have partnered with Venture Philanthropy to strategically invest in our nonprofit sector.

“Venture Philanthropy was gratified to see how their investment in SVP on behalf of Access Youth Academy was so valuable and likely to pay dividends for years to come. Not only did the work by SVP inspire further investments in Access Youth Academy by Venture Philanthropy, but it also confirmed how an investment in SVP magnifies the value of the donation to the nonprofit.” – Walter Green, Venture Philanthropy
