Planning the Path Forward: SVP Partners with SDCBC to Strengthen Direction

When San Diego County Bicycle Coalition (SDCBC) partnered with SVP, the original goal was to develop a case for support and conduct an operational review to identify areas for improvement. As the engagement progressed, new developments led to a strategic pivot.


The SVP team—Tom Watlington (Lead Partner), C’Anne Vaughn, and Brian Zaharris—adapted quickly, shifting their focus to a modified strategic planning process, viewed as a necessary foundation for long-term fundraising success.


The team began by conducting a cash flow analysis and high-level financial forecast to assess SDCBC’s current financial health. They explored potential revenue sources and developed a financial tracking tool to help the organization evaluate event profitability and better manage future expenses.

“We have a three-year strategic plan thanks to our SVP team and our lead, Tom Watlington. This plan will keep us focused and help us achieve our goals. Getting staff and a board of 18 to agree on anything, much less critical organizational goals is no simple task, so kudos to the SVP team for keeping us on track!” – Chloé Lauer, Executive Director 

As a result of the engagement, SDCBC now has new tools, shared strategies, and a clearer path forward. The organization is better positioned to pursue effective fund development and continue advancing its mission to make San Diego a more bike-friendly region.
